DID YOU KNOW?
The average porcupine has about 30,000 quills or specialized hairs, which
it uses
as a defensive weapon. The quills are comparable in hardness and
flexibility to slivers
of celluloid (a type of plastic, often used to make
movie film) and so sharply pointed
that they can penetrate any animal's skin.
In addition, the quill tips consist of
tiny barbs (sharp points similar to
arrows), which make the quills very
hard to remove.

3. Intermission.
Like Diamond
by David Fritz (Mr Music)
Like Diamond is one of the latest duos to burst onto
the South African
music scene.
This duo was formed in September 2010 and consists of
myself, David
Fritz, and Joel Hesselberg.
It's not the first time we have worked together.
In 2008 we worked together in a Rock group, Stoned Castle.
In 2009 we worked together on a SA's Got Talent project,
under the name
DJ Destiny.
In 2010 our paths crossed again when we were both
invited to become
members of a 6-piece Pop/Rock group, premium Drive.
It was this chance meeting that became the spark
that lit this new
fire: Like Diamond.
You see, with our first association in the band Stoned castle we
were
both passengers on a larger ship.
When we decided to work together on the DJ Destiny project for
SA's got
talent, we didn't have any other vision than to
put together our own
composition and present it to the
organizers, and then simply take what
comes!
Well, nothing came, so the project simply died a natural death.
But, when we were lumped together yet again in Premium Drive,
we got
the message, you might say at last, that there is
definitely something
greater in stall for us if we
would just sit down and plan and work for
it.
And so Like Diamond was born.
During our previous rehearsals and socials we got to
singing and
playing music from quite a few artists and groups.
Singing Neil Diamond songs is something Joel has been doing
for years
as he has a deepish voice and Neil Diamond songs
are suited to his voice. On
top of that he does sound quite a bit like Neil Diamond too!
In fact, one of the songs we wrote for
the SA's Got Talent competition,
Sing To Me, is a song that
Neil Diamond could just as well have written and
recorded!
Anyway, having started work together again in Premium Drive,
Joel
contacted me about us two getting together again
for another, more
permanent, project.
Seeing as Neil Diamond songs generally suits Joel's voice and
taken the
fact that we both are Neil Diamond fans, Joel
suggested that we put together
a Neil Diamond tribute show.
I liked the idea, but added that then we might
as well go the full nine
yards and
record an album of the music too!
See, we don't have money to employ musicians to accompany us, so
we
planned to perform the show initially with
backing music, till such time as
we have built
up a name and following and the necessary finances to
afford accompanying musicians.
If we had to record the accompanying music, then
90 percent of the work
towards an album would already have been done.
In late September Joel and I started working on recording
the backing
music: phase 1 of the project.
We completed this phase in January.
When recording the backing music we stuck to the philosophy
that the
Neil Diamond numbers should be immediately recognizable, yet
not copied to
the tee. We also wanted to create the
feeling that live musicians played on
the album,
not computers!
So what next?
Now we have to complete the album, the greater part of which
has
already been done!
We aim to finish the album and have it ready for sale
by the end of
March.
In the meantime we are already doing dressless dress rehearsals,
with
the first performance of our show, Sing To Me,
on Tuesday 1 February at a
private function.
(You didn't think Joel and I were going to go on stage in
dresses, did you?)
I would say that all going well we should be ready
to hit South Africa
in a big way from the end of March.
We would love to tour with our show to as many places
as possible,
reviving the great Neil Diamond hits.
We love his music and song writing because he
wrote from the heart,
including experiences both good and bad,
and what he did, he did with
passion!
And you'll experience that same passion when attending our shows,
first
put on on a smaller scale, but soon, it is hoped,
on a grand, national
scale!

5. Encore
COLIN THE ABORIGINE
A rich man living in Darwin decided that he wanted to throw a party
and
invited all of his buddies and neighbours.
He also invited Colin, the only aborigine in the neighbourhood.
He held the party around the pool in the backyard of his
mansion.
Everyone was having a good time drinking, dancing, eating
prawns,
oysters and generally having a great time
At the height of the party, the host said, 'I have a 15ft man-eating
Crocodile in
my pool and I'll give a million dollars to anyone who has the
guts to jump in.'
The words were barely out of his mouth when there was a loud splash.
Everyone turned around and saw Colin in the pool fighting the
croc,
Jabbing the croc in the eyes with his thumbs, throwing punches, doing
all
kinds of stuff like head butts and chokeholds, biting the croc on the
tail
and flipping the croc through the air like some kind of Judo
Instructor.
The water was churning and splashing everywhere.
Both Colin and the croc
were screaming and raising hell. Finally Colin strangled
the croc and let it
float to the top like a dead goldfish.
Colin then slowly climbed out of the
pool.
Everybody was just staring at him in disbelief.
The host says, 'Well, Colin, I reckon I owe you a million dollars.'
'Nah, you all right boss, I don't want it,' said Colin.
The rich man said, 'Man, I have to give you something. You won the bet. How
about
half a million bucks then?'
'No thanks... I don't want it,' answered Colin.
The host said, 'Come on, I insist on giving you something.
That
was amazing. How about a new Porsche and a Rolex and some stock
options?
Again, Colin said "No."
Confused, the rich man asked, 'Well Colin, then what do you want?
Colin said, 'I just want the guy who pushed me in.'
...
Today I'll take my leave with the beautiful "Ebb Tide", as
sung by
the Platters.
"First the tide rushes in;
plants a kiss on the shore;
then rolls out
to sea;
and the sea is very still once more;
so I rush to your
side;
like the on-coming tide;
with one burning thought;
will your arms
open wide;
at last we're face to face;
and as we kiss through an
embrace;
I can tell, I can feel;
you are love, you are really mine:;
in
the rain;
in the dark;
in the sun;
like the tide at its ebb;
I'm at
peace in the web;
of your arms."
Love and the best music
