1.  Overture.

"Life is a song - sing it.
Life is a game - play it.
Life is a challenge - meet it.
Life is a dream - realize it.
Life is a sacrifice - offer it.
Life is love - enjoy it."
- Sai Baba

"If you shut up truth and bury it under the ground, it will
but grow, and gather to itself such explosive power
that the day it bursts through it will blow up everything in its way."
- Emile Zola

..

Hi, and welcome to the last issue for September,
which is also the last issue for the third quarter of 2010.

Soothing Ivories Volume 3

Amid the humdrum of life there is activity in
my recording studio around the recording of
Soothing Ivories volume 3.

I have decided to arrange the songs in a
different way from the previous albums in order to move
closer to "meditation music" as recorded by other artists.

Watch this space for updates!

Music Fact Of The Week

In section 2 below you'll find the new
"Music Fact Of the Week". Scroll down and have a look.

This week I have a "fastest" item for you.

Did You Know?

Congratulations are now in order for the dung beetle Onthophagus taurus,
which has just been named the world's strongest insect, according
to a new study.

Rob Knell from Queen Mary, University of London and
Leigh Simmons from the University of Western Australia found
that the strongest of these beetles could pull 1,141 times their
own body weight.

That's equivalent to a person lifting close to 180,000 pounds -
the same as six full double-decker buses.

Main Article

The main article today is "Teaching Is...", by
yours truly. Please read it in section 3 below.

3.  Intermission.

Teaching Is...
by David Fritz

I received such positive feedback after last week's
article: "The Night I Met Einstein".

Thanks to all who sent me their comments.

To pick up the thread for today's article let's re-visit
Einstein's last words from the article:

“My young friend here and I, however, were engaged in the greatest
activity of which man is capable: Opening up
yet another fragment of the frontier of beauty.”

Learning is probably the most important activity which
an individual can indulge in, for in so doing he/she
is "opening up" to experience and enjoy life
more fully.

And if learning is one of the most noble
activities, then teaching must rank right up there as
one of the most noble professions.

Then I received the following piece from Hettie - thanks again!

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man,
a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education.

He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided
his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie.
Be honest. What do you make?"

Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied,
"You want know what I make? (She paused for a second, then began...

"Well, I make kids work harder than they  ever thought they could.
I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honour winner.
I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them
sit for 5 without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental."

"You want to know what I make?"

She paused again and looked at each and every person
at the table.

"I make kids wonder.
I make them question.
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions.
I teach them to write and then I make them write. Key boarding isn't everything.
I make them read, read, read.
I make them show all their work in math. They use their
God given brain, not the man -made calculator.
I make my students from other countries learn everything they
need to know about English while preserving their unique cultural identity.
I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe."

"Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they
were given, work hard  and follow their hearts, they can
succeed in life."

Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.

"Then, when people try to judge me by what I make,
with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold
my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant."

"You want to know what I make? I MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
What do you make Mr. CEO?”

His jaw dropped, he went silent.

THIS IS WORTH SENDING TO EVERY TEACHER, EVERY CEO, EVERY PERSON YOU KNOW.
A truly profound answer!!!

Teaching is...the profession that makes all other professions possible!

5.  Encore

Some men are not romantic - finish, and 'klaar'!!

Joyce: Jimmy babe, now that we are engaged, I think we should start
calling each other pet names, sweet names.

James: (uninterested) alright babe. So what do you wanna call me?

Joyce: I think I will call you tiger.

James: Why tiger babe?

Joyce: (sexy tone) because you're charming, handsome, smart and
calculating. And you Jimmy babe, what do you wanna call me?

James (still uninterested): I think I will call you zebra.

Joyce: (smiling and kissing his cheek) ooh that sweet, why would you
call me that?

James: because of your stretch-marks!!!!!!!!

...

Today I'll take my leave with an oldie, "Memories Are Made Of This",
sung by Jim Reeves.

Click on this link to listen to an excerpt from the song:
http://www.mr-music.co.za/sample-0219.mp3

"Take one fresh and tender kiss;
add one stolen night of bliss;
one girl one boy some grief some joy;
memories are made of this.

Don't forget a small moonbeam;
folded lightly with a dream;
your lips and mine two sips of wine;
memories are made of this.

Chorus
Then add the wedding bells;
one house where lovers dwell;
three little kids for the flavour;
stir carefully through the days;
see how the flavour stays;
these are the dreams you will savour.

With His blessings from above;
serve it generously with love;
one man one wife one love true life;
sweet memories are made of this;
memories are made of this."

Love and the best music
