Today I brought a Beethoven piece, "Les adieux",
to usher us into
this section of my newsletter
in which I discuss new and recent
events.
- MUSICAL TERM EXPLAINED: Flute
The word flute may indicate a variety of wind instruments
without
reeds. The modern orchestra makes use of transverse flutes,
augmented as
necessary by a smaller transverse
flute called a piccolo and very
occasionally by a larger one, the
alto or bass flute, pitched a fourth
lower.
The straight flute is known in English as a recorder,
but it was not
used in the orchestra after the later Baroque period.

My seven octave recording "scale":
Seventh octave - Soothing Ivories
volume 2
by David Fritz
This is the last article in my series on
my 7-octave recording
"scale".
I originally based the series on Shakespeare's
"Seven ages of
man".
In the seventh age he sees man as helpless again.
I am glad to report that my seventh age was a highlight: reaching
a
peak.
In the "fifth octave" article in this series I told
you about the
recording of Soothing Ivories volume 1.
That was the first album I
recorded which consisted of own
compositions only.
At the end of 2008 I decided to make recording a
Soothing Ivories album
a yearly event.
I planned to record volume 2 in 2009. Originally I planned on
recording
it somewhere in our winter months with the view to releasing
the album some
time in August.
Things did not quite work out that way because eventually I
only
released the album on 11 October: about 6 weeks later than I
originally
planned.
If you recall, I told you about my friend Charles
who visited with us
and offered to help me
when I wanted to record Ivories in Love volume 2
earlier in 2009.
Although Charles is no musician and is not trained in any
studio
skills, at least I had a pair of eyes to
read dials, look up things in the
manual, and generally help me
to operate the recording desk.
But Charles had left, so I had to do everything
without sighted
help.
It took quite a bit of fiddling and trial and error to
get myself to
the point where I could
competently record, adjust and re-record things,
totally alone.
On Soothing Ivories volume 1 I recorded the music over
a backdrop of
mostly bird and stream sounds. For this album
I used a backdrop of bird and
sea sounds.
The sea sound is different on every track, and generally
so are the
bird sounds.
I sourced all the bird and sea sounds myself,
which alone took quite a
bit of time.
The music for the twelve tracks came by inspiration
over a period of
about 4 months, from April 2009.
Again I decided to work on a 12-track album, where each
track
represents about an hour-and-a-half in the day.
The track represents the atmosphere, sights, sounds and
activities that
mostly would (could) take place in that time period.
Although it helps to read the booklet of the album at
least once, to
understand the context of the music,
the music can be enjoyed, as is.
And so I've covered my recording career, up till October 2009.
I started recording in a friend's studio, with a musician,
also acting
as engineer, but ended up having my own studio,
where I now record
single-handed!
When I started my recording career way back in
2005, I very tentatively
put one own composition on the album.
I now have over 50 own compositions of which 45 are spread over
the 8
CD's I have recorded to date.
All this was not meticulously planned, although since very
young I've
always dreamt of having a recording studio of my own,
and of composing and
recording my own music.
This just shows again that if you have a goal in mind and
steadfastly
move in that general direction, you
will achieve it!
Have I arrived yet?
No, I've just crested one relatively high peak in the mountain
range.
There are more peaks to conquer and I look forward to the
challenge.
I will keep on improving, no matter what I'm doing.
Looking ahead, I plan to record Soothing Ivories
volume 3 during July
this year aiming to
release it on Monday 9 August.
But I plan to release at least one other album
before then, so keep
reading for details.

Lost in translation - Junk Mail Classifieds
Sometimes when companies introduce a product into a foreign market,
names have different meanings or something goes wrong in the
translation of slogans.
Here are some funny examples of what could happen when marketing
campaigns get lost in translation...
Coors beer translated its slogan, "Turn it loose," into Spanish, where
it was read as "Suffer from diarrhoea."
Clairol introduced the "Mist Stick" curling iron to Germany, only to
find out that in German "mist" is slang for manure. Not too many
people
had use for the "manure stick".
Scandinavian vacuum manufacturer Electrolux used the following in an
American campaign: Nothing sucks like an Electrolux.
The American slogan for Salem cigarettes, "Salem-Feeling Free", was
translated into the Japanese market as "When smoking Salem, you will
feel so refreshed that your mind seems to be free and empty."
When Gerber started selling baby food in Africa, they used the same
packaging as in the US, with the beautiful baby on the label. Later
they learned that in Africa, companies routinely put pictures on the
label of what's inside, since most people can't read English.
An American T-shirt maker in Miami printed shirts for the Spanish
market, which promoted the Pope's visit. Instead of "I saw the Pope"
(el Papa), the shirts read "I saw the potato" (la papa).
In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into
"Schweppes Toilet Water."
Pepsi's "Come alive with the Pepsi Generation" translated into "Pepsi
brings your ancestors back from the grave," in Chinese.
In Chinese, the Kentucky Fried Chicken slogan "finger-lickin' good"
came out as "eat your fingers off."
When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was
apparently unaware that "no va" means "it won't go." After the company
figured out why it wasn't selling any cars, it renamed the car in its
Spanish markets to the Caribe.
...
Today I'll take my leave with a beautiful
"Hello again", co-written and
sung by Neil Diamond.
"Hello again hello;
just called to say: hello;
I couldn't sleep at
all tonight;
and I know it's late;
but I couldn't wait.
Hello my friend, hello;
just called to let you know;
I think about
you ev'ry night;
when I'm here alone;
and you're there at
home;
hello.
Chorus
May be it's been crazy;
and may be I'm to blame;
but I put
my heart above my head;
we've been through it all;
and you loved me just
the same;
and when you're not there;
I just need to hear.
Hello my friend, hello;
it's good to need you so;
it's good to love
you like I do;
and to feel this way;
when I hear you say.
Hello my friend, hello;
just called to let you know;
I think about
you ev'ry night;
and I know it's late;
but I couldn't
wait;
hello."
