Do Or Die: Goal Achievement For The Novice And Inexperienced
by
David Fritz (Mr Music)
We are taught from an early age to be "logical" and "practical".
"You
can't take step 2 unless you've taken step 1".
We must start at a point and
work everything
forward from there, sequentially.
This works: day follows night, two o'clock follows one o'clock;
everything neatly planned and ordered!
And so we try and live our lives. Have a goal,
plan from step 1 through
step X how you're going to get to your goal,
then execute that plan.
And if this was so simple, such a sure way of getting what
you want,
then EVERYBODY would be kings.
But there are times and people for whom this does not work.
And that's
the time for "Do Or Die".
We often get stuck in planning, because planning surmises that we
know
all the puzzle pieces, and planning is just arranging them all in
the proper
sequence.
But when we make plans, as in setting goals, we DON't know all the
pieces.
We guess, we assume and we have nameless gaps.
What happens to the orderly mind then?
Well, it looks at the plan and says: "this is a lot of hogwash!
You've
got gaps; how are you going to get from step 5 to step 7?"
And we freeze: yes, the mind is actually vetoing
your plans, because
it's not logical, so it "can't be done"!
How many half-plans do you have in your mind or on paper?
It's like being stuck in the mud: frustrating, and eventually we just
forget about it.
But there is another approach: unconventional, but effective.
I call it "Do Or Die".
Let's tackle the problem from another angle: the illogical end.
All this really takes is a determination to reach your goal.
Let's say that you want to take a trip to the ocean this year.
All you need is a genuine "I Will" desire and attitude.
Then start with the end: the when!
Sit down and work out a reasonable date.
If you said "this year", then any date in the past and
any date after
31 December 2011 is obviously out!
If the thought had just come to mind, tomorrow would logically
be out,
so don't consider tomorrow as an option.
We are going to use logic in determining the "when".
So work back from 31 December, and consider, logically, which time frame
suits you best. For example, you may not like going to the
ocean during
the holiday season, but you would also not like to go
during Winter.
Right, so you have a time frame: you obviously will spend
a week or two
there, and need a couple of days for travelling.
You could end up with a 2-week period in November as your desired
goal!
Now for the "how".
Make a list of what you currently know of, that's necessary to
achieve
your goal.
If you're working, you need X number of days leave.
You need a place to
stay while at the ocean.
You need X amount of money to pay for transport,
accommodation, etc.
Remember, this is an "I Will" job: it's a goal you would really like to
achieve.
Make a poster for yourself and put it up at home
in a spot where you
will see it regularly.
Your poster should have your goal as a heading.
I want to go to the ocean"
It should have a sub-header with your date"
"7 to 20 November 2011"
Under this list the items you need to attend to in order to accomplish the
goal.
Although you'll see your poster several times a day, make sure to
set
aside 10 minutes a day to study it. The best is if you could spend
5 minutes
before bed time and 5 minutes after rising with it.
As new items for the list pop up in your head, add them to the list.
Every evening and especially in the morning, when you
study your
poster, ask yourself: "for each item, what can I do towards accomplishing
it??"
Jot down your answers on a piece of paper or on your
official "to do
list".
For example: for the "X amount of money", you could go and open a
special savings account to stash away the money for your trip;
or you
could go to the bank and sign a debit order, even if it's just
for a few
Rand, to go off monthly, into the special savings account for your trip.
For the "accommodation" item you could look at holiday brochures, newspaper
ads,
etc. to find good, reasonably priced accommodation.
Just work on the list EVERY day, adding any necessary items, crossing
off finished items!
You see, often as you are working on your plan new info
and solutions
present themselves: solutions that you could not
see if you were to sit down
an plan meticulously from day 1 to the end before starting.
"Fortune favours the brave."
- Publius Terence
Be brave, you know what you want, and simply start
working towards it
daily, and forces and circumstances
will arrive to help you towards your
goal.
Be sure also to mention your plans to family, friends and
colleagues.
The more people who know, the more input and help could be
forthcoming.
To summarize:
1. Be clear on your goal: know what you want and when.
2.
Write the goal down, and list all the steps you currently
know of which must be completed to reach your goal.
Put it
up at home in a place where you will regularly see it.
3. Twice daily
study your goal and the steps listed to reach it;
take
actions for the steps listed, and add and cross off steps as you go.
And before you know it you would have accomplished your dream!
4. "Seduction".

by Cliff Richard.
"Chorus
Congratulations and celebrations;
when I tell everyone that
you're in love with me;
congratulations and jubilations;
I want the world
to know I'm happy as can be.
Who would believe that I could be happy and contented;
I used to think
that happiness hadn't been invented;
but that was in the bad old days before
I met you;
when I let you walk into my heart.
Chorus
Congratulations and celebrations;
when I tell everyone that
you're in love with me;
congratulations and jubilations;
I want the world
to know I'm happy as can be.
I was afraid that maybe you thought you were above me;
that I was only
fooling myself to think you loved me;
but then tonight you said you couldn't
live without me;
that round about me you wanted to stay.
Chorus
Congratulations and celebrations;
when I tell everyone that
you're in love with me;
congratulations and jubilations;
I want the world
to know I'm happy as can be.
Instrumental interlude
Chorus
Congratulations and jubilations;
I want the world to know I'm
happy as can be;
I want the world to know I'm happy as can be."
