DID YOU KNOW?
The Airbus A380, which is seven storeys tall and which has wings big enough
to hold
70 cars, replaces the Boeing 747 jumbo jet as the world's biggest
passenger
aeroplane. It's capable of carrying 853 passengers if the plane
was configured
purely for economy class.

NEW!
Jon Schmidt, our well-known pianist, has put up a new video on YouTube for

This time it's one of his earlier compositions, his most difficult
piano piece, "Rockmaninoff".
Here's the link to the video on YouTube to watch. Click, look,

- MUSIC FACT OF THE WEEK
The bassoon is the woodwind instrument with the lowest pitch.
It has a
tube of 9 feet long which is bent double
to make the instrument manageable,
is conically bored and
has a double reed.
It has a range from first octave B-flat to
fifth octave D.
There is a bassoon part in nearly all orchestral scores written since the
1700's,
as well as in most chamber wind ensemble music.
Mozart wrote a bassoon concerto, as did 3 or 4 other composers.
Probably
the most famous bassoon passage is from Grieg's "In the Hall of the
Mountain King"
from his Peer Gynt suite, and another well-known extract is
from Dukas's Sorcerer's
Apprentice.
- CD's FOR SALE
Below is a list of all my CD's available for purchase.

saving, but when you click through to purchase you will
only pay R110 per

To purchase at your special price, simply click on the link provided

3. Intermission.
When Last Did You Buy Something Beautiful
by David Fritz (Mr
Music)
What is beautiful to you? What tickles your heart strings?
Flowers? Plants? Books? Paintings? Music?
Whatever it is, when last did you buy something beautiful?
And now I'm
talking about things you buy for their aesthetic value,
things you buy to
pleasure you.
Wherever you open a newspaper, there's gloom.
Whenever you switch on the telly, you hear about recession.
When you listen to news on the radio, you hear about the
shortage
of...
It seems like, or media would like you to believe that the supply of
good things are drying up, if they have not dried up already,
or that
there is no place for good/beautiful things!
On top of this so-called shortage of good things we are permanently
bombarded with articles emphasizing lack:
- Ten ways to save in this economy
- How to protect your income in this
economy
- How to make ends meet in this economy, etc.
Saving is a good and necessary habit, protecting your
assets is good
stewardship and thrift has always been seen as a good way of living.
But, where's the balance?
The way we are being brainwashed you would say that the good and
beautiful things have dried up.
And yet there's plenty, and it does not have to cost
an arm and a leg
either.
When last did you take the time to visit an art exhibition and
study
the pieces leisurely?
When last did you attend one of the many free music recitals, not
even
to talk of the very reasonably-priced ones?
What about strolling in nature?
Yes, there are many good and beautiful things left and
most are within
your financial reach, if you don't allow others
to convince you to the
contrary.
We all know the saying, and it's true, "all work and no play
makes
Johnny a dull boy".
This is true in all areas in life.
Yes, all save and scrimp and no pleasure makes Annie a dull girl.
All only-necessities-and-no-fun makes Peter a dull man too.
Fun things, beautiful things and non-essentials do not have to cost
an
arm and a leg, and you should make a point of including some
beautiful
things to buy, or at least to go and enjoy free then, in your life daily.
Here are some ideas on how to afford them:
1. Buy art: you don't have to buy an original Rembrandt.
Prints (copies) are often affordable. If that's also too
expensive, buy a poster, or art from a street
vendor.
2. Some street vendors will swap old clothes and old shoes
for paintings and/or ornaments. Else sell your old
clothes/shoes to them and use the cash to buy something
beautiful.
3. If you cannot afford, not even R50 from a street vendor,
at least schedule an afternoon a week and go to
the local art gallery where you can enjoy beautiful
pictures for free.
4. To listen to something beautiful, buy a CD or DVD. If you really
can't afford it you can also sell old clothes/shoes
to street vendors and use the cash to buy music.
5. You can buy CDs second-hand, giving you access to
the
same quality music at a fraction of the cost.
6. You can attend any of the free music concerts and
enjoy beautiful music, live!
7. You can swap old/unused items for something you want.
There are ways to get to enjoy the beautiful things
in life, despite
the economy or your own financial situation.
It's all got to do with your attitude and priorities.
If you make it a priority to enjoy/add something beautiful to your
collection, whether art, music or books, every month, then you will
find
a way to do it without negatively impacting on your commitments and
necessities.
So please keep me posted; I would like to hear which beautiful
things
you bought for yourself.
I'm waiting for your e-mails.

5. Encore
I bought my son an iPad, my daughter an iPod. The wife got me an
iPhone and I got her an iRon.
She wasn't overjoyed even after I explained that it can be integrated with
the
iWash, iCook, iClean network.
This opened the iNag reminder service which totally wiped out the
iScore function!
....
Today I'll take my leave with the popular "Blanket On The Ground", sung
by Billie Jo Spears.
"Come and look out through the window;
that big old moon is shinin'
down;
tell me now, don't it remind you;
of a blanket on the ground.
Remember back when love first found us;
we'd go slippin' out of town;
and we'd love beneath the moonlight;
on a blanket on the ground.
Chorus
I'll get the blanket from the bedroom;
and we'll go walkin'
once again;
to that spot down by the river;
where our sweet love first
began;
just because we are married;
don't mean we can't slip around;
so let's walk out through the moonlight;
and lay the blanket on the
ground.
Oh remember how excited;
we used to get when love was young;
that
old moon was our best buddy;
we couldn't wait for night to come.
Now you know you still excite me;
I know you love me like I am;
just once more I wish you'd love me;
on the blanket on the ground.
Chorus
I'll get the blanket from the bedroom;
and we'll go walkin'
once again;
to that spot down by the river;
where our sweet love first
began;
just because we our married;
don't mean we can't slip
around;
so let's walk out through the moonlight;
and lay the blanket on
the ground."
