I also have, what I call my “trusted” equipment.

This is a mini series of articles telling you about my “trusted” equipment.

I hope you will enjoy these little articles and learn from them, especially if you are planning on entering the music arena.

In the first three articles in the series I told you about my
UPS, my backup computer and my Roland CD2 recorder, and how they have stood me in good stead
through the years.

My fourth piece of trusted equipment is my Multi card reader.

It may not look like much, but before I bought it in 2009 my studio,
in terms of my CD2 recorder, and my computer, my gateway to outside,
were two islands (separate entities), and communication between the two
was cumbersome.

The CD2 records the music onto CF cards, like the one on the
picture.

To get the music off the CF card meant that I had to write
it to a CD, then load the CD in my computer and
copy (rip) the information from it onto my laptop’s hard drive.

Another route was to use the outputs on the CD2, and connect a
cable between the CD2 and my laptop, then record the music while it was playing on the CD2.

Now, with this card reader, I simply eject the CF card from
the CD2 and insert it onto the slot on the Multi card reader,
coupled to my laptop, and immediately I can
transfer the files with a copy or paste operation to my laptop.

No more (re-recording) music from the CD2 to the laptop, no more
writing the music to disk first, then copying it off again; just
ejecting the CF card, sticking it into the card reader,
and within a minute the music is on my laptop.

And to think that the Multi reader only cost me R100!

In the first two articles in the series I told you about my
UPS and my backup computer, and how they have stood me in good stead
through the years.

My third piece of trusted equipment is my Roland CD2 recording machine.

It may not look like much, but I have recorded 5 of my 10 albums
with this trusty machine, which has not given any trouble in the 4 years I’ve
owned it.

I bought this machine in April 2007, but at that time I was
a partner in another recording studio, and
I used all their equipment, so the CD2 was just lying around at home.

Then, without warning, in the last week of July in 2007 our
partnership broke up, leaving me without a recording studio
and an album due for release on the first Sunday in September:
only 5 weeks later!

Suddenly the recording machine, bought and lying dormant at home, became the focus of my life, as it was the only route for me to
record the album, for which I had already committed myself.

Since then I have recorded 4 other full albums on the machine,
as well as many backtracks and recordings for others.

Apart from the machine working flawlessly, it also is the only recording
machine that I can use as a blind person, without any sighted help.

The machine may not look like much, but it has all the
features necessary to record and master a CD, while not
knocking a whole in your budget, and it is very portable and easy to use.

Although originally bought as a backup and a stand-in, it has now
become the heart of my recording work.

As music maker I’m in the public eye, and people expect an uninterrupted, “record-like” performance.

No matter what your skill; in the end you’re only as good as your equipment.

In the first article I told you about my UPS.

Many is the time that the power tripped at a function, but my equipment kept on working, thanks to this trusty piece of equipment.

The second piece of “trusted equipment” I own is an IBM pc.

Nothing fancy; the usual square desktop box, containing a
Pentium III capacity CPU, less than a GIG of memory, only a 20 GIG hard drive, but the important thing: soooooo reliable!

I got this pc about 9 years ago, and have never had a day’s trouble with it.

It still has all the original components that came with it, including a stiffy drive.

I use this pc during live performances for playback of my backing tracks.
I use it when DJ’ing or doing other promotion work, to play music from.
I also occasionally use it for sequencing in my studio.

Now I have never been a “brand” person, especially not around computers.
I have always held the philosophy that: what matters is reliability.

That’s why many of my “tools” are relatively old: because my buying decisions were based on reliability and functionality only!

Interestingly enough, this pc has never been my “pc of choice”, meaning that

I usually used another pc as my first choice, but my first choice pc packed up several times, and when I had to fall back on this one, it was there, purring when you plug in the power cable, starting up immediately, and baling me out of trouble more than once.

Yes, laugh, but it’s still running with Windows 98!

I don’t want bells and whistles: I want a stress-free, hassle-free life, which means I need equipment that always work, and function predictably.

Saturday I took off a lot of data from it and reloaded the machine for use on my Sunday gigs. I ran a “Check Disk” and Defrag: not one bad sector on the drive after 9 years!

Being a pianist you would probably expect me to put my piano, or a specific brand of piano first on the list.

Were I on the performing circuit 50 years ago this might very well have been the case.But living in the times that we do, this is not quite the case. Let me explain.

Pianos used to be everywhere; part of the furnishings of every hall, eating- and  housing establishment 50 years ago or so.

So a pianist could simply turn up at one of these venues and sit down at “Old Faithful” and play his/her heart out.

But today pianos are scarce, and of the few to be found in such establishments, few are “roadworthy”.

Many pianists, myself included, cart digital pianos around to overcome this problem.

Now digital pianos run on electricity, as does sound systems, needed to amplify the digital piano’s sound.

No electricity, no concert!

So what do you think I count as one of my most important pieces of equipment?

My UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)!

About 8 years ago I invested in a Mecer UPS, and this heavy little box has saved the day for me on many occasions!

It’s only 140mm wide, 365mm long and 170mm high, but weighs a ton!!

I simply run my digital piano, computer and sound system from it and relax, knowing that if the power supply takes a dip, I’ll be okay.

But I don’t only use it when performing. My Mecer is used in my home studio/office, where I also run my recording desks, CD duplicator and laptop from it.

Unfortunately I have experienced losing hours’ worth of recording due to a power outage, so now I don’t work without this “trusted” piece of equipment anymore!

Yes it’s out!

The next album in my Ivories In Love series, containing
14 beautiful love songs, is out.

As usual it’s an album of beautiful piano, with backing music.

What’s on this album?

As you can see, all but one, are well-known “love” standards.
The only “unknown” piece is track 8, Collage No. 3,
which is my own composition.

Tuesday I called Ellen and gave her my headphones,
then I played her a snippet from each track.

Her response:

“What did you do differently this time? I think it’s the
best sounding album of all!”

I told her that I had used a new process (technique) to record this album.

Guess what I did?

I made a live recording!

Yes, Monday evening, on Valentine’s day, when everyone
was enjoying their Valentines and Valentine’s dinner at Sir Thomas,
I made a live recording, right there where I was performing.

And I am very satisfied with the results, as I’m sure you’ll also be,
 when you listen to my new CD.

One thing I could unfortunately not do, was put up
microphones at the venue to pick up the audience.

This is not practical at Sir Thomas, due to the fact that
they lie right next to a busy road on which
mine trucks travel up and down incessantly.

Now all that’s left for you to do is to get your order
in.

I love Valentine’s day. I love it for many reasons, but
one of the main reasons is my love for romantic music.

Next Monday is Valentine’s day, and I’m responsible for
the music menu at Sir Thomas: for planning it, and then playing the best music
as accompaniment to the restaurant’s top cuisine, thus ensuring
the finest Valentine’s experience.

It’s a long evening as I have to provide music right through
from before the early arrivers, to after the last lingerers leave!

I’ve picked 100 love songs for the occasion.

I’ll be playing 60 of them live during the main part of the evening and
the other 40 I’ll be putting on as background: some before
I play live, five during the break I take, and the rest after
my live stint.

Love and a magic Valentine’s Day 2011

I made brief mention of my

involvement with the band Premium Drive
in my recent articles called Fridays and Saturdays.

Today I’ll tell you a bit more about Premium Drive.

The band was formed during October 2010 and consists of the

following members:
Joel Hesselberg     - Lead vocals,
myself, David Fritz - Keyboard and vocals,
Dave Landsberg      - Lead guitar and backing vocals,
Bul Myburgh         - Rhythm guitar and backing vocals,
Geoff Pellow        - Bass guitar and backing vocals and
Roy Le Roux         - Drums and Percussion.

Apart from Dave Landsberg, the rest of us were all members of the
Rock band, Stoned Castle, from late 2007 through 2008.

So, although this band has only recently been formed, most of
us have worked together and have known each other for a while now.

Stoned Castle was a classic Rock band, concentrating on
playing guitar-focused Rock music from the sixties and seventies.

Premium drive has a wider focus, playing
classic rock numbers of groups like Uriah Heep, but also pop numbers
by groups such as Beatles , Rolling Stones and artists from Neil
Diamond to Joe Cocker.

The main focus is on variety, so listen out for
popular Pop/Rock numbers and modern rock music.

This is what our repertoire currently looks like:

Love and the best music

This is the seventh and last article in my mini series in
which I tell you about my activities on a day-to-day basis.

Today I’m going to tell you about Sundays.
Not Sundays in the past, not Sundays in the future,
but Sundays, as in the recent past and right now!

What does a composer/pianist/keyboardist/arranger/producer/everything’s
Sunday schedule look like?

I rise at about 6.30. Then ablutions and
some household and personal routines.

Somewhere between 7 and 7.30 a.m. I get into my
studio/office, and do some admin and e-mails.

Sundays are my regular performance day at Sir Thomas, a
restaurant in Cullinan, about 60 km from where I live.

Normally Nigel or Charles drives me there.

We leave home at about 9.30, having packed
and get to the restaurant round 10.30.

Then its unpacking and setting up the equipment - a task
that can take anything from 15 minutes on a good or rushed day,
to 30 minutes, depending on delays and/or snags.

Around 11 o’clock I start playing recorded music,
matching the mood in the restaurant with my music choices,
and gradually transitioning the mood to a level in harmony with
my piano music that I start performing at about 11.45.

I play for about an hour and a half before taking
a break of about 15 minutes.

Then a play for another hour and a half or so,
till around 3, depending on how busy the restaurant is.

I officially play till 3, but if there are still people
eating that time, then I play a bit longer, generally
until most people are on desserts and/or drinks or coffee.

I play a variety of music: some pieces on piano only,
others with backing. I play own compositions and
genres from classic to contemporary.

Then I put on background music and relax till we
are served lunch.

Somewhere between 4 and 4.30 we start packing up,
say our goodbyes and hit the road home.

On the way home we make a stop or two to buy some
essentials, and we normally arrive back home around 6 p.m.

Then its unpacking and stowing away of gear and re-connecting
that which was un-connected the morning.

Then I do a small amount of admin and preparations
for Monday, depending on what’s planned.

This is the sixth article in my mini series in which I
tell you about my activities on a day-to-day basis.

Today I’m going to tell you about Saturdays.
Not Saturdays in the past, not Saturdays in the future,
but Saturdays, as in the recent past and right now!

What does a composer/pianist/keyboardist/arranger/producer/everything’s
Saturday schedule look like?

I rise at about 6.30. Then ablutions and
some household and personal routines.

Somewhere between 7 and 7.30 a.m. I get into my
studio/office, and do some admin: e-mails, but mainly preparation
for my early morning activities.

If you’ve read the previous articles in this series then you would know
that I’m the keyboardist for a band called Premium Drive.

Every second Saturday morning the band rehearses from
9 to 1. That means I have to leave about 8.15 to get to
our rehearsal venue in time.

But unfortunately its not just get in the car and go!
I have to take equipment with. If I had enough keyboards
I could have left a set there, but now I have to disconnect some of my keyboards,
pack them, cables and other accessories and load it in the car.

So I have to get busy on this task by about 7.45 or so.

I normally return from rehearsals about 2 o’clock, then its
unpack the car and re-setting up everything here I took apart the morning.

Some Saturdays I perform at functions. This normally takes
place in the late afternoons and evenings, but as I have to
take my own equipment I have to leave here about two and a half hours
before the start of the function.

This gives about an hour or so for travelling and then another hour or so
for finding the spot where I have to set up, unloading the equipment and setting it all up.

If you take into account that I have to uncouple and load equipment
here first, then I normally have to get going on
my side about 3 hours before the start of the function.

And after the function it takes another two and a half to three hours
to pack up there, ride back home and unload and store everything here!

In-between these activities I use Saturdays to conduct pre-event meetings
with people for whom I will be providing music at their functions.

I don’t just rock up at a function and play whatever I fancy.

I discuss the music requirements before-hand to make sure that i
will be playing what the people want and expect.

As many people hold fulltime jobs a Saturday is a convenient time
to conduct these meetings.

As I do not have a fixed Saturday schedule a Saturday is
a convenient day to catch up on anything outstanding, and
believe me, there’s always something.

For example, today I have to complete the task of
publishing my newsletter on the Web.

I have been experiencing big timeout issues when FTP’ing files
to my website. As a result, although my newsletter has
been sent out, the latest copy is not yet available online.

Guess what I’m doing this morning? Battling with my
service provider to get my files uploaded so that my
newsletter can be available online!

Then this afternoon I have a pre-event meeting with a couple
getting married in March.

Next time I’ll tell you about Sundays.

What do I prepare for?

Apart from my solo music work I also am involved in projects with other musicians.

One of them you have read about in my articles on Mondays and Wednesdays, in which I made mention of an accomplice coming in to do some recordings.

I also am the keyboardist for a band called Premium Drive.

This group was formed recently: I think October or so.
The drummer, Roy, contacted me and asked whether I would be interested to join.

I played with Roy in a Rock band, Stoned Castle till the end of 2008,
and in fact all of the members of this group, except for the guitarist Dave,
used to be members of Stoned Castle.

Now that you know a bit about the band you may start understanding what
I do on Fridays.

Our band plays numbers of above-average complexity so you
can’t just wing your way through them.

I generally put Fridays aside to listen to and practise the numbers that we
will be doing at our Saturday rehearsals.

If, for some or other reason, my newsletter wasn’t sent out by
Thursday evening, then I get that done first on a Friday.

Saturdays are popular for functions.

If I have a function on Saturday, then I also prepare for it on Fridays.

Fridays also tend to be the general “clean up” day. Whatever I didn’t
finish from earlier the week gets put on Friday’s list to complete.

A final two notes about Fridays.

Fridays are also a popular day for going out and sometimes for functions too, so sometimes I perform Friday evenings.

When I’m working on one of my own recording projects Fridays are also
one of the recording days.
